Songhoy Blues ‘Meet Me In The City’ 12"
One of the most globally successful and exciting acts to emerge from Africa in recent years - and following their breath taking, series-stealing show at this year’s Nile Rodgers-curated Meltdown Festival at London’s South Bank - Mali’s Songhoy Blues make a return with a 5-track EP of new music released on Transgressive Records.
Available digitally and on yellow 12” vinyl with digital download code, the ‘Meet Me In The City’ EP features David Ferguson and Blake Mills mixes of ‘Time To Go Home’ (a new track written for them by Will Oldham aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), a cover of Junior Kimbrough’s ‘Meet Me In The City’ and a great version of the Fela Kuti & The Africa 70 track ‘Shakara’ featuring Fela’s son, Femi Kuti.
‘Time To Go Home’ and ‘Meet Me In the City’ were originally produced by Matt Sweeney (who first introduced the band to Will Oldham) and recorded in London and ‘Shakara’ was recorded in Mali and produced by the band, Mark LeVine, Manjul and Anton Pukshansky.
Talking about working with the band, Matt Sweeney said: “I think it's safe to say that the brave poets of Songhoy Blues have a different idea what a 'bad day' is than pretty much all other rock bands. Their music and singing are powerful beyond words. Making a new song with them was a humbling honor and an unforgettable joy.”
The EP marks an impressive and seismic musical leap forward for the band, who released their second album, ‘Résistance’, to massive acclaim in June 2017. The same year saw them play a storming set on the Park Stage at Glastonbury, a sold out headline show as part of the Summer Series at Somerset House in London, a festival stealing appearance at the Liverpool Festival of Psychedelia and appear at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Later... 25th anniversary show.
