Freddie McGregor's Showcase, released in 1981 and known in the UK as Lover's Rock Showcase Jamaica Style, was a real turning point in his career. Before this, he'd found only modest success, but those earlier recordings already showed a gifted singer with an authentic voice.

A major shift came in 1979, when McGregor linked up with producer Winston "Niney" Holness for the celebrated Mr. McGregor album. Here, roots and romance sit in perfect balance, with Niney's dub magic meeting McGregor's take on classic soul, exactly as the title suggests.
